Culture – entire way of life for a group of people (customs, beliefs, language)
Diversity – variety
Unity – being as one or in agreement
Values – beliefs that guide the way people live
Immigrant – person who leaves one country to go and live in another
Ancestor – relatives that lived before you
Ethnic group – people who share the same customs and language
Census – official study of the people of a country (every 10 years)
Population – number of people living in a place
Prejudice – negative opinion formed without proof
Constitution – plan of government for a country
Democracy – people make the laws and run the government
Republic – people elect representatives to run the country
Citizen – person born in a country or choose to become a member of that country by law
Civil rights – individual rights of a citizen under the law
History – study of the past
Historian – people who study the past
Primary source – information from the time being studied (eyewitness, video, photo)
Secondary source – account of the past written by someone who was not there (textbook, recent film)
Oral history – spoken records that are passed from one generation to the next
Perspective – point of view, how you see something
The US is country of much diversity because we have ancestors who were immigrants from elsewhere.
Americans share the values of family, friends, freedom, and the right to choose what we want to do.
It is important to study history so we do not repeat the mistakes from the past.
We the people of the United States are the first seven words to the Constitution. This is important because it states that “we” have a say in the government.
