-         Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492
-         The King of Portugal refused Columbus when he asked him to fund the trip.
-         Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain financed the expedition.
-         Colony – settlement far away from the country that rules it
-         Expedition – journey made for a special purpose
-         3 ships – Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria
-         Columbus thought he was in India.
-         Columbus expedition took about 2 months.
-         Columbus had 2 logs on the ship. Why?
-         Columbus was looking for a water route to Asia.
-         Columbus arrived at the Bahama Islands.
-         Columbian Exchange – movement of people, plants, animals, and germs                                           across the Atlantic
-         EAST to WEST – sugar, horses, disease, sheep, wheat, onions
-         WEST to EAST – potatoes, maize (corn), tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins,                                    avocados, tobacco
-         Columbus’ 2nd trip – 17 ships
-         Conquistadors – Spanish soldiers
-         Tenochtitlan – capital of the Aztec Empire
-         Moctezuma – leader of the Aztec Empire
-         Moctezuma sent the Spaniards two disks of solid gold and silver.
-         Hernando Cortes – leader of the conquistadors
-         Dona Marina – Indian who translated for Cortes. She helped get other                                   Indians to join him.
-         When the conquistadors conquered Tenochtitlan, they called it New Spain.
-         Aztec Weapons – wooden spears, stones, wooden shields, armor made of                                 tightly woven cotton
-         Spanish Weapons – steel, guns
-         The Aztecs were trapped for 75 days.

-         Tenochtitlan became known as Mexico City.
