Study Guide: 3 Branches of Government

Legislative:
-          Make the laws
-          Congress (2Chambers)
-          Senate – 100 Senators (2 from each state)
-          House of Representatives (number based on population)

Executive:
-          Approve the laws
-          President is in charge
-          President (limited to 2 terms of 4 years)
-          Cabinet – group of people who help the President make decisions

Judicial:
-          Carry out the laws
-          Supreme Court
-          9 Judges (appointed to that position for life or until they retire)

When the President signs a bill, it becomes a law.
Veto – right of the President to reject a bill
Impeach – accuse a public official with a wrongdoing
Example: The President was impeached for inappropriate conduct.
Checks and balances – system that makes sure no part of the government has too much power
Pennsylvania has 18 state representatives.
Pennsylvania State Senators:
-          Democrat: Bob Casey Jr.
-          Republican: Pat Toomey
Constitution – plan of government for the United States
Articles of Confederation – the first plan of government for the United States
Bill of Rights – the first ten amendments to the Constitution
